This course is mandatory for students taking the Associate Degree in Primary Education and the Certificate in Primary Education. It must be taken after or at the same time as Fundamentals of Linguistics. The course introduces students to teaching of language and literacy to children from birth to the age of eight years old. Students acquire knowledge of how young children use the skills and components of language. Students explore and begin to apply teaching strategies that will enable young children to to develop these skills and components. Students also encounter strategies for modifying instruction to meet the needs of children from diverse social, cultural, economic and linguistic backgrounds and with varying levels of ability.
